When you think of Chinese New Year, what comes up in your mind? Red lanterns and envelopes? Perhaps even the "Barongsai"? (barongsai is the Chinese Dragon btw) Well, for me, it's all about the family reunion.
Every year, me and my family would meet up at my great grandmother's place with all of my niece's and nephews, along side my uncles and aunties. To add to that, everyone's grandparents would come to meet our great grandmother, who is still alive to this day.
There we would sit at the comically large sofa and drink some soda's. We would eat some candy and snacks, and then eat a simple, yet nostalgic lunch together at the dining table that spans across the entire room.
After reuniting together at my great grandmother's house, we would go to some place, (it changes every year), where we would hang out until midnight. (it gets boring sometimes, but oh well.. we only meet a few times a year)
During dinner time, we would eat peacefully, seperated (like family by family) until around 8, where the "Barongsai's" would show up. When they do actually show up, all the kids would gather up some Red Envelopes to give to them. We would wait for them to stop performing, then group up and give the said envelopes to each and every one of them. (there are usually around 4, red, green, yellow/gold, and blue).
Here's a picture of a "Barongsai," if you don't already know what it is:
